| Voice Lessons for Young Children Generally, it can be very hard for parents to find a voice teacher for their young children. This is mainly because it is not very practical to shape a voice that is still growing - and the attention span of young children (13 years and younger) can be pretty small. It can also be very unhealthy, if an unskilled voice teacher does not have the proper education concerning young voices. However, if you feel that your child has a strong vocal gift, there are several things you might want to consider: |

| Although it is impractical to teach any of the more advanced vocal techniques to a young singer, it is a very good idea to find a voice teacher that can keep your child's voice healthy. A knowledgable teacher can help your child to sing in a healthy manner and avoid vocally damaging singing styles. | ||||||||||||||||||
| The years before puberty are the ideal time for your child to learn basic musical skills, such as reading music. Piano lessons are a good option if you cannot find an available voice teacher in your area. If you do find a voice teacher, have them work on sightsinging with your child. | ||||||||||||||||||
| This is also the ideal time to get your child used to being on stage and performing. While the voice teacher is working on keeping the voice healthy and on music-reading skills, they can also be preparing fun songs for recitals. In learning and memorizing a song - and then performing it - a child will gain confidence and have a great time! | ||||||||||||||||||
| If you're child is struggling with singing in school, a skilled voice teacher can evaluate their "ear" and tell you whether the problem is something that can be fixed over time. Generally, very few people are truly "tone deaf." If you catch this early, your child can enjoy the upcoming years in choir. They may not be the next American Idol, but they won't be embarassed to sing in company. | ||||||||||||||||||
| Young Singers in my Voice Studio Right now I have several young singers in my studio. Generally, I think that 10 years old is a good age to start lessons, although I have worked with students as young as 6 years old. It depends on the child in question. I have an extensive background in vocal pedagogy, so I can work with your child on how to sing in a healthy manner, while learning to read music and working on performance skills. If you're interested in lessons for your child, feel free to contact me. |
